Improved Forest Management

Technical details

Trees took Middlebury College the last step to its goal of campuswide carbon neutrality. The Vermont liberal arts college, founded in 1800, tracks its carbon impact in 5 categories: heating and cooling, travel, waste, electricity, and college-owned vehicles. It reduced its emissions by, among many other initiatives, installing solar panels and adopting dozens of energy-efficiency projects. A biomass plant that burns locally sourced wood chips took over most of Middlebury's heating and cooling and generates up to 20% of campus electricity.

Environmental project developer Bluesource worked with Middlebury on that final step: conserving 2,100 acres of pristine Green Mountain Forest at its Bread Loaf Campus in perpetuity through an easement. The project generates carbon offsets by annually sequestering more than 19,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents above the regional baseline. The college retains enough carbon credits to offset its remaining carbon impact. It sells the rest on the voluntary offset market.

A carbon offset represents the reduction of 1 metric ton (2,205 pounds) of carbon dioxide emissions. The Middlebury project does that by absorbing (sequestering) CO2 from the atmosphere. The project meets UN Sustainable Development Goals 4 (quality education), 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), 13 (climate action), and 15 (life on land).

Cloverly buys offsets that meet accepted standards for being real, measurable, verifiable, permanent, and additional. "Additional" means that the carbon savings would not have happened without the offset project and that the project would not have happened unless it got certified to sell carbon offsets. The American Carbon Registry oversees verification of the Middlebury project. You can find verification documents at
